The combination of warmer temperatures and more stable conditions has turned the fishing on Lake Sakakawea into something special. Simply put:

One of the best parts about the current bite is that there isn't just one "magic" presentation. Fish are feeding aggressively and can be caught in a variety of ways.

Want to troll crankbaits? Go for it.

Like pitching jigs? There are days when that bite can be lights out as well.

Fish Are Spread Out

Walleyes continue to move around quite a bit, which is typical for a large reservoir like Sakakawea. We're finding fish shallow(2-10ft) some days, deeper on others, and occasionally both at the same time.

The biggest key remains: Trust your electronics.

Fish are constantly following baitfish, adjusting to changing weather patterns, and relocating based on food availability. The anglers having the most success are the ones spending time looking for fish rather than simply fishing old waypoints.

Summer Patterns Are Taking Shape

We're beginning to see more classic summer patterns develop as fish spread out along shoreline breaks, flats, and points. The bays continue to show more activity, and areas with

cleaner water have been particularly productive.

The water conditions have also continued to improve, with the lake cleaning up nicely. Even areas north of the bridge around White Earth are showing much clearer water, opening up more opportunities throughout the reservoir. The forage base on Lake Sakakawea remains incredible, and healthy populations of smelt and other baitfish have fish feeding heavily.

And it's not just walleyes keeping rods bent. Smallmouth bass continue to provide excellent action and are adding plenty of excitement to the summer bite. There are plenty of opportunities for nonstop action, especially for families and kids looking to catch lots of fish.
