Memorial Day Weekend Fishing Report – Lake Sakakawea 🎣

The bite heading into Memorial Day weekend on Lake Sakakawea has been REALLY strong, and all signs point toward things getting even better as water temperatures continue to rise.

Right now, the key has been slowing down and fishing methodically. Walleyes have been holding primarily in the 10–20 foot range along sandy and gravel shorelines, and the most productive presentations have been:

✅ Dragging jigs slowly

✅ Lindy rigging at .5 mph or less

✅ Covering water carefully and staying patient

This has definitely been more of a slow-moving, finesse-style bite, but the fish are there in good numbers and quality.

As we move through the holiday weekend and temperatures warm up, expect fish to begin pushing shallower and becoming more aggressive. We’re anticipating some excellent opportunities along warming shoreline structure and transition areas over the next several days.

One thing we’re really liking right now is how the lower water conditions are setting fish up on more traditional structure. With the lake only expected to rise about 4 feet this season and peak around 1831’, fish are relating very consistently to defined areas—which makes for repeatable patterns and steady action.

The 2026 season is shaping up extremely well, with a strong population of eater-size walleyes throughout the system. If you’ve been thinking about booking a trip, now is the time to get on the calendar.

At Liebel's Guide Service, we’re on the water daily tracking these movements and staying dialed into the most productive patterns so our clients can spend more time catching fish and less time searching.

🎣 Whether you’re:

  • looking to learn Sakakawea,

  • chasing your limit of walleyes,

  • or just wanting an unforgettable day on the water with family and friends…

…we’d love to have you in the boat.

📅 Prime June and July dates are filling quickly.
