The bite is HOT on Lake Sakakawea!

If you’ve been waiting for prime summer fishing, now’s the time to hit the water. The New Town and Van Hook areas are producing excellent walleye action right now, and the fish are cooperating on just about every presentation you throw at them. Spinners, jigs, crankbaits—it’s all putting fish in the boat.

The shallow bite has been especially strong along wind-driven shorelines. Look for those areas where wind has pushed warmer surface water and bait up shallow—it’s been lights out in as little as 5–10 feet of water some days.
On calmer days, fish are generally sliding out a bit deeper, favoring cleaner water. We’re finding good numbers in 15–25 feet, depending on clarity and structure.
Water color is a big clue right now:
In water with some stain or color, fish are hanging shallower longer.
In clear water, they’re slipping out deeper as the sun climbs.
Overall, it’s a fantastic time to be on the lake—and it’s only going to stay good as we roll deeper into July.
