Things are looking up on Lake Sakakawea! With rising temperatures and stable weather finally settling in, the bite is really picking up just in time for the 4th of July holiday stretch. Water temperatures are climbing, and fish activity is following closely behind.
Current Fishing Conditions

We’re seeing lots of walleyes in the system right now—and some quality fish at that. The one curveball? The lake is loaded with smelt. This means there’s an abundance of natural bait in the water, which can create finicky fish on certain days.
Techniques for Success
The key is to present something just a little different. Some days, a slower, more finesse approach is needed. On other days, a more aggressive tactic gets the job done. We’ve had success in 2–20 feet of water, depending on conditions.
To attract the walleyes, we recommend using minnows, crawlers, and leeches. Soft plastics and crankbaits have also proven effective at times. It's essential to vary your approach based on how the fish are responding.
What to Expect During Your Trip
Bottom line: the fish are definitely there, and the conditions are shaping up for a fantastic holiday weekend on the water.
If you want to guarantee some rod-bending action, we’ve got boats ready and available. With the right equipment and techniques, you can enjoy a rewarding day of fishing.
