Things are looking up on Lake Sakakawea! With rising temps and stable weather finally settling in, the bite is picking up just in time for the 4th of July holiday stretch. Water temps are climbing, and fish activity is following right behind.

We’re seeing lots of walleyes in the system right now—and some quality fish at that. The one curveball? The lake is loaded with smelt. That means there’s plenty of natural bait in the water, which can make for some finicky fish on certain days.
The key is presenting something just a little different. Some days it’s slower and more finesse; others, a more aggressive approach gets the job done. We’ve had success in 2–20 feet of water depending on conditions, with minnows, crawlers, and leeches producing. Soft plastics and crankbaits have had their days as well.
Bottom line: the fish are there, and the conditions are shaping up for a fantastic holiday weekend on the water. Get out and enjoy it—and if you want to guarantee some rod-bending action, we’ve got boats ready.
