🍀 Lucky Lakes & Snowpack Forecasts – What’s Ahead for Lake Sakakawea This Season! 🍀

As we roll into March and celebrate a little St. Patrick’s Day luck, many of us are already dreaming of green shores, open water, and reeling in some legendary catches on Lake Sakakawea! But before we can launch the boats, there’s one big factor to keep an eye on: water levels.

🌊 Current Water Level Outlook – Will We Need a Little Luck?

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' March 2025 Runoff Report, this year’s runoff forecast is projecting about 19.6 million acre-feet (MAF)—around 85% of average. While that’s below normal, don’t worry—Lady Luck (and Mother Nature!) may still have a few surprises up her sleeve. 🍀

🏔️ Mountain Snow Season Isn’t Over Yet!

Here’s where we’re feeling optimistic: A large portion of the mountain snowpack season still lies ahead!

Historically, much of the critical snowfall that impacts Lake Sakakawea’s water levels happens through March and April. So while we’re trending a little low right now, there’s still plenty of time for the mountains to pile on more snow—giving us the runoff boost we need for healthy summer water levels.

🚤 What Happens If Water Stays Low?

If runoff trends toward the lower basic forecast (15.2 MAF), we may see some boat ramps become less accessible—especially in areas already prone to low water issues. But no need to panic just yet—our friends at the Corps of Engineers often step in with improvements if conditions demand it.

At Liebel’s Guide Service, we’ll be keeping a close watch and staying in touch with local updates to make sure you’re in the know.
