Memorial Day Weekend Fishing Report – Lake Sakakawea 🎣

Memorial Day weekend delivered some excellent fishing on Lake Sakakawea, and the patterns evolved quite a bit over the course of the weekend as water temperatures warmed.

The weekend started with fish holding a little deeper, primarily in the 14–20 foot range, where slow presentations continued to dominate. Dragging jigs and Lindy rigs at speeds of .5 mph or less was the key to putting consistent fish in the boat early in the weekend.

As warmer weather settled in, fish began making a noticeable move shallower each day. By Monday, many of our better fish were coming from just 4–9 feet of water.

One of the biggest developments was the jump in water temperatures. Temps climbed into the upper 50’s throughout much of the lake, and some areas even creeped into the 60's on Monday. That warming trend should have these fish getting even more aggressive and “in the mood to eat” as we head into June.

The most productive areas throughout the weekend were:

✅ Shallow sand flats

✅ Gravel shorelines

✅ Transition areas with warming water

Minnows were still producing extremely well, but we also started seeing signs of the crawler bite coming alive. A few fish were also caught pulling crankbaits, which is always a great sign as we move toward more aggressive early summer patterns.

With lake levels expected to peak around 1831 feet this season and only a modest rise from winter pool, fish are relating tightly to classic Sakakawea structure and shoreline features.

That consistency is exactly what anglers want to see heading into June.

The 2026 season is shaping up to be a fantastic one, with strong numbers of eater-size walleyes throughout the system and fish beginning to transition into classic summer locations.

At Liebel's Guide Service, we’re on the water every day tracking these transitions so our
