One Year Later: Why the Nitro ZV20 Sport Was the Right Choice for Lake Sakakawea

When we introduced the Nitro ZV20 Sport to the Liebel's Guide Service lineup last season, one of the most common questions we heard was:

"Why would you go from a 21-foot boat to a 20-foot boat?"

After more than a full year of guiding out of the ZV20 Sport on Lake Sakakawea, I can confidently say this boat has exceeded every expectation I had for it.

Sometimes the best way to evaluate a boat isn't at a boat show or during a test drive—it's after hundreds of hours on the water, countless clients, changing weather conditions, and a full guide season of real-world use.

The verdict?

The ZV20 Sport has been an absolute home run.

More Than Just a Number

On paper, going from a 21-foot boat to a 20-foot boat might sound like a step backward.

In reality, it wasn't.

One of the biggest changes—and one of the best decisions Nitro made with the ZV20 Sport—was replacing some of the rear storage(Horseshoe) compartments with integrated jump seats. At first, I wasn't sure how much of a difference that would make. After more than a year of guiding, I can confidently say it was a huge improvement.

The jump seats give us comfortable seating for additional guests while creating a much more open and functional cockpit. Instead of having large storage boxes taking up valuable floor space, the layout feels cleaner, more spacious, and far more comfortable for clients moving around the boat throughout the day.

When you're guiding groups of three or four anglers, that extra room matters. Clients aren't climbing over gear, bumping into storage compartments, or feeling cramped during a long day on the water. The boat simply feels bigger than its measurements suggest.

Now, as a tournament angler, there is one tradeoff. The ZV20 Sport has less tackle storage than my previous boat. But honestly, that's probably a good thing. Like most tournament fishermen, I used to carry enough tackle to open a small bait shop. The reality is that most of it rarely left the storage compartment. The ZV20 has forced me to be more organized, more efficient, and pack smarter. Instead of carrying every lure I've ever purchased, I focus on bringing what I actually need for the conditions at hand.

And if we're being honest...

Did we really ever need all that tackle we packed into our boats anyway?

For guiding, the tradeoff has been an easy one. The added comfort, seating, and usable floor space have been far more valuable than the extra storage ever was.

Nitro Zv20 Sport is Built for Big Water

Lake Sakakawea can test any boat.

Strong winds, long runs, changing conditions, and rough water are all part of life here. The ZV20 Sport has handled every bit of it with confidence.

The deep, wide hull provides an outstanding ride while maintaining the stability anglers need when moving around the boat, fighting fish, or fishing multiple anglers at once.

One thing I've especially appreciated is how nimble the boat feels. It responds quickly, handles extremely well, and still provides the confidence you want when the lake gets angry.

For a guide who spends hundreds of hours on the water every year, that matters.

A Fisherman's Layout

As guides, we live out of our boats.

Everything needs to be organized, accessible, and efficient.

The ZV20 Sport delivers:

  • Excellent rod storage

  • Ample tackle storage

  • Spacious fishing decks

  • Comfortable seating

  • Easy movement throughout the boat

Whether we're pulling bottom bouncers, casting jigs, trolling crankbaits, or chasing active fish with Garmin LiveScope, the layout works incredibly well.

It's one of those boats that simply makes guiding easier.

AquaTraction Was Worth Every Penny

One of the upgrades clients comment on most is the AquaTraction flooring installed by AquaTraction of North Dakota.

After a full season of use, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Benefits include:

  • Cushioned comfort during long days on the water

  • Improved footing when conditions get wet

  • Cooler surface temperatures during hot summer days

  • Easy cleanup at the end of a trip

  • A professional, custom appearance

When you're spending 8-10 hours standing on a deck every day, comfort matters.

At the end of the day, what matters most is the experience our clients have.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Clients appreciate:

  • The comfortable ride

  • Spacious layout

  • Easy access around the boat

  • Comfortable seating

  • Smooth performance on rough-water days

Those things may not show up in a spec sheet, but they absolutely matter during a full day on Lake Sakakawea.
